Dry mix mortar usually uses Portland cement as the cementitious material, making up about 20% to 40% of the total mix.
Quartz sand is the main fine aggregate and is used in large amounts. It usually needs to be dried and screened to meet the required size and quality.
Sometimes, fly ash or slag powder is added as an admixture. Although only used in small amounts (about 1% to 3%), admixtures play an important role.
They are chosen based on the formula needs to improve workability, layering, strength, shrinkage, and frost resistance.
Cellulose ether:
As a basic additive in mortar, it helps keep water in the mix, improves stickiness, and makes it easier to work with.
It is widely used in many types of dry mix mortar products.
Redispersible polymer powder:
It improves the flexibility, ease of use, bonding strength, and waterproofing of mortar. It works well in wall plaster, tile adhesive,
EIFS, self-leveling mortar, and other applications.
Water reducer:
The main role of a water reducer is to lower the amount of water needed in mortar, which helps increase its compressive strength.
Common water reducers in dry mix mortar include casein, naphthalene-based agents, melamine formaldehyde, and polycarboxylic acid.
Casein is a high-performance water reducer, especially suitable for thin-layer mortar.
Retarding agent:
There are two types of coagulants: accelerators and retarders. Accelerators speed up the setting and hardening of mortar.
Common ones include calcium formate, lithium carbonate, aluminate, and sodium silicate. Retarders do the opposite—they slow down the setting and hardening process.
Defoamer:
Powder defoamers used in dry mix mortar are mainly polyols and polysiloxanes. Besides controlling bubbles, they also help reduce shrinkage.
