Challenges of HPMC in Detergent

Apr. 03, 2025

HPMC can support thickening and stabilization in detergent formulations, but its value depends on water quality,

target viscosity, formulation compatibility, cost, and complete-system performance.

Performance and Formulation Challenges

HPMC is not a primary cleaning agent, so formulators should not expect it to replace surfactants for grease or heavy-soil removal.

Its role should be evaluated alongside surfactant selection, water hardness, and required product rheology.

Water Quality and Stability

Hard water and formulation composition can affect water-soluble cellulose ethers. Check dispersion,

viscosity, and stability in the water and finished formula rather than relying only on laboratory water.

Cost and Grade Selection

Higher viscosity does not automatically mean better detergent performance.

Select the grade according to required rheology and formulation behavior, then confirm cost-performance balance.

JINTEDIFU's HPMC JINT™ series is presented for detergent formulations with thickening and stabilization, water retention, surface modification, and formulation compatibility.

For initial screening, HPMC JINT™ 400 is the company's low-viscosity grade,

while JINT™ 75000, JINT™100000, JINT™150000, and JINT™200000 are high-viscosity grades.

Their product pages currently list construction applications, so detergent suitability should be confirmed through testing rather than assumed from viscosity alone.

Practical Testing

Compare candidate grades at the same dosage and test viscosity, dispersion, storage stability, and performance in the water and detergent system.

This provides a basis for grade selection and cost control.
