Premium HEC for Cosmetics: Achieving Instant Viscosity and High Transparency in Body Wash

Jul. 10, 2026

Clear appearance and controlled viscosity are important formulation targets for transparent and translucent body wash products.

For formulators, the choice of thickener affects not only final viscosity, but also processing, hydration, texture, and formula appearance.

Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC) is a water-soluble cellulose ether commonly considered when a formulation requires viscosity modification in an aqueous system.

For body wash development, however, HEC grade selection should be based on the actual surfactant system, target viscosity, clarity requirement, processing method, and final sensory profile rather than viscosity grade alone.

Why HEC Matters in Body Wash Formulation

In a body wash system, the thickener needs to provide controlled viscosity without creating an undesirable appearance or texture.

For formulators, the main evaluation points include:

 - Target viscosity and flow behavior

 - Visual clarity of the finished formula

 - Dispersion and hydration during processing

 - Compatibility with the surfactant system and other ingredients

 - Uniformity between laboratory and production batches

 - Final skin feel and dispensing behavior

A suitable HEC can therefore be evaluated as part of the complete formulation rather than as an isolated raw material.

Where HEC Can Be Considered

HEC may be evaluated in aqueous personal care formulations where viscosity adjustment is required.

In transparent or translucent cleansing products, the evaluation should focus on whether the selected grade can achieve the required viscosity while maintaining the desired appearance.

Potential development areas include:

 - Transparent body wash

 - Shower gel

 - Hand wash

 - Facial cleanser

 - Bath gel

 - Other aqueous rinse-off formulations

The final suitability depends on the complete formula and processing conditions.

A grade that performs well in one cleansing system may not provide the same result in another.

How to Select an HEC Grade

The most practical way to select an HEC grade is to start with the formulation requirement and then compare candidate grades through controlled testing.

1. Define the target viscosity

First establish the required finished-product viscosity and dispensing behavior.

If the formulation requires a relatively low viscosity increase, a lower-viscosity grade may be evaluated first.

If a higher viscosity contribution is required, higher-viscosity grades may be considered.

2. Check clarity after full hydration

For transparent body wash, viscosity alone is not enough.

Check the appearance after the HEC has fully hydrated and after the complete surfactant system has been incorporated.

Look for:

 - Transparency or haze

 - Undissolved particles or lumps

 - Viscosity development

 - Changes after standing

3. Evaluate processing conditions

Dispersion and hydration depend on the actual manufacturing process.

HEC should be introduced using a controlled addition and mixing procedure appropriate for the selected grade.

A small laboratory trial can help identify whether the selected HEC develops viscosity consistently under the intended process.

Practical Testing Before Scale-Up

Before selecting a commercial grade, prepare small laboratory batches using the same key ingredients and approximate processing sequence as the final formula.

Compare at least:

 - Initial viscosity after hydration

 - Appearance and clarity

 - Viscosity after 24 hours

 - Viscosity after longer storage where practical

 - Pouring and dispensing behavior

 - Batch-to-batch repeatability

When comparing grades, keep the HEC addition level, mixing conditions, hydration time, temperature, and measurement method consistent.

This makes the comparison more meaningful and helps avoid selecting a grade only because it gives a higher initial viscosity.

Evaluating JINT™ HEC Grades

JINAN JINTEDIFU currently lists three HEC JINT™ grades: HEC JINT™ 40000, HEC JINT™ 60000, and HEC JINT™ 100000.

According to the current product pages, HEC JINT™ 40000 is a water-soluble HEC with moderate viscosity,

with a specified viscosity range of 32,000–48,000 mPa.s for a 2% solution at 20°C. The product page currently recommends it for paint and coatings.

HEC JINT™ 60000 is also described as a water-soluble HEC with moderate viscosity,

with a specified 2% solution viscosity of 48,000–72,000 mPa.s at 20°C. Its current listed application is paint and coatings.

HEC JINT™ 100000 is described as a high-viscosity HEC,

with a specified viscosity range of 80,000–120,000 mPa.s for a 2% solution at 20°C. Its current listed application is also paint and coatings.

For a body wash project, these grades should therefore be treated as candidates for technical evaluation rather than automatically designated as cosmetic grades

Buyers and formulators should confirm personal-care suitability, specification requirements, and sample performance with JINTEDIFU before commercial selection.

Choose Based on the Formula, Not the Number Alone

The HEC grade with the highest viscosity specification is not automatically the best choice for a body wash.

The correct selection depends on the required finished viscosity, clarity, processing conditions, surfactant system, and test results.

For transparent cleansing products, the recommended workflow is:

Application requirement → target performance → candidate HEC grade → laboratory comparison → final product selection

This approach helps formulators balance viscosity, appearance, processing, and formulation cost without over-specifying the raw material.
