HPMC (Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose) is widely used in cement-based mortar formulations as a thickener,
suspending agent and water retention agent. In tile mortar, these functions help formulators control fresh-mortar
consistency, water retention and application behavior.
The key is to select an HPMC grade that matches the formulation requirements rather than simply choosing the highest viscosity.
HPMC can provide several important functions in mortar tiling applications:
1) Thickening: Helps control mortar viscosity and consistency.
2) Water retention: Helps the fresh mortar retain water during application.
3) Suspension: Helps maintain a more uniform mortar system.
These properties are relevant to the workability and stability of tile mortar. However, the final performance
depends on the complete formulation, including cement, aggregates, polymers, water and other additives.
A practical selection process is:
Application requirement → target mortar properties → viscosity grade → formulation testing
For example, if a tile mortar formulation requires a higher viscosity level, a high-viscosity HPMC grade can
be evaluated. If a lower viscosity is required for the target formulation, another grade should be compared.
Higher viscosity should not automatically be considered better. The objective is to find the grade that
provides the required balance of viscosity, water retention, suspension and workability.

Before selecting a grade for production, a simple comparative test can help.
Keep the main formulation unchanged and compare different HPMC grades under the same mixing conditions.

1) Fresh mortar consistency and workability.
2) Water retention.

4) Application behavior.
5) Relevant tile mortar performance according to the required standard or internal test method.
This approach allows formulators to compare grades based on actual formulation performance rather than viscosity alone.
