RDP for Tile Adhesive Dosage Chart and Mixing Instructions

Redispersible Polymer Powder (RDP) is widely used in cement-based tile adhesive to improve bonding strength, flexibility and overall application performance.

However, RDP dosage should not be treated as a fixed number for every tile adhesive formulation.

The appropriate dosage depends on the adhesive class, cement content, aggregate system, cellulose ether, required bonding performance and other formulation factors.

For this reason, the dosage chart below should be used as a starting point for laboratory trials, rather than a universal formula.

Recommended RDP Dosage for Tile Adhesive

A practical starting range for RDP in cement-based tile adhesive is:

Tile Adhesive TypeSuggested RDP Starting Range*
Basic cement-based tile adhesive1.0–2.0%
Standard tile adhesive1.5–3.0%
Higher-performance tile adhesive2.5–4.0%
Flexible / demanding formulations3.0–5.0%

*The actual dosage should be determined through formulation testing.

The appropriate level depends on cement, sand, fillers, cellulose ether and the required performance of the finished adhesive.

More RDP does not automatically mean better tile adhesive.

Once the formulation reaches its required performance level, increasing RDP may provide diminishing benefits while increasing formulation cost.

What Does RDP Do in Tile Adhesive?

RDP is mainly used to improve the polymer-modified performance of cement-based tile adhesive.

The key benefits include:

 - improved bonding strength

 - improved flexibility

 - better overall mortar performance

The final performance, however, depends on the complete formulation rather than RDP alone.

For example, if a tile adhesive has poor water retention or poor open time, simply increasing RDP may not solve the problem.

Cellulose ether, water level, cement and aggregate grading should also be evaluated.

Which RDP Should Be Used for Tile Adhesive?

Different RDP grades can be considered according to the formulation requirements.

RDP JINT™-502 — High Bonding Strength

JINT™-502 is a redispersible polymer powder with high bonding strength for dry mix mortars.

The product is suitable for applications including wall putty, tile adhesive and EIFS, with bonding strength and flexibility listed as its functions.

For tile adhesive formulations where bonding performance is an important target, JINT™-502 can be included in the initial sample evaluation.

JINT™-503 — Universal Grade

JINT™-503 is described by JINTEDIFU as a universal-grade RDP for dry mix mortars

It can be used in wall putty, tile adhesive and EIFS, with bonding strength and flexibility as its listed functions.

It can therefore be considered when developing a general-purpose tile adhesive formulation.

JINT™-740 — High Bonding Strength

JINT™-740 is also positioned as a high-bonding-strength RDP for dry mix mortars and is listed for wall putty,

tile adhesive and EIFS. Its listed functions are bonding strength and flexibility.

It can be evaluated when stronger bonding performance is a key requirement of the tile adhesive formulation.

JINT™-745 — For Formulations Requiring Waterproofing

JINT™-745 can be considered when the formulation requires a combination of bonding strength, flexibility and waterproofing

This makes it relevant for tile adhesive systems where water-related performance is an important consideration.

How to Mix RDP in Tile Adhesive

RDP is normally added as part of the dry premix rather than being added directly to the finished wet mortar.

A typical dry mixing sequence is:

1. Mix cement, sand and mineral fillers.

2. Add the required amount of RDP.

3. Add cellulose ether and other dry additives.

4. Mix until the powder is evenly distributed.

5. Add water during application according to the formulation.

6. Mix thoroughly and allow the mortar to mature if required by the formulation.

7. Re-mix before application when necessary.

The exact mixing sequence should be adjusted according to the customer's production equipment and formulation.

How to Test RDP in Tile Adhesive

When comparing RDP samples, testing the powder alone is not enough.

The most useful comparison is to test each RDP in the same tile adhesive formulation.

Typical evaluation items include:

 - tensile adhesion strength

 - adhesion after water exposure

 - open time

 - slip resistance

 - workability

 - flexibility or deformation-related performance where required

Keep the cement, sand, cellulose ether, water level and mixing conditions consistent when comparing different RDP grades.

This makes it easier to determine whether a performance difference actually comes from the RDP.

RDP Dosage Is Only One Part of the Formulation

If increasing RDP dosage does not improve tile adhesive performance as expected,

check the rest of the formulation before adding more polymer.

Important factors include:

 - cement type and dosage

 - sand grading

 - filler content

 - cellulose ether selection and dosage

 - water content

 - mixing conditions

 - substrate and curing conditions

The right RDP grade + the right dosage + a balanced formulation is generally more effective than simply increasing polymer dosage.

Conclusion

RDP is an important component in cement-based tile adhesive, particularly for improving bonding strength and flexibility.

There is no single dosage that works for every formulation. Start with a reasonable trial range,

then optimize the dosage based on the required performance and the complete formulation.

For tile adhesive development,

JINTEDIFU offers several RDP grades that can be evaluated according to different formulation requirements,

including RDP JINT™-502, RDP JINT™-503, RDP JINT™-740 and RDP JINT™-745.

Request an RDP sample from JINTEDIFU and evaluate the product in your own tile adhesive formulation.
