Choosing the right redispersible polymer powder (RDP) for cement based tile adhesive starts with the application
requirements, not simply with selecting a higher performance grade.For tile adhesive manufacturers, the key is to
match the RDP with the required bonding strength, flexibility, and water related performance, and then verify the
choice through formulation testing.
Cement substrates can differ in porosity, surface condition, moisture, and curing condition. Tile type and installation
environment also affect the performance requirements of the adhesive.
For practical RDP selection, consider these factors:
If the main requirement is stronger adhesion between the tile adhesive and cement-based substrate, select an RDP
designed with a focus on bonding strength.This is particularly relevant when the formulation needs stronger
adhesion rather than simply general-purpose polymer modification.
Tile adhesive may need to accommodate minor movement between the tile and substrate. When flexibility is an
important requirement, choose an RDP that provides both bonding strength and flexibility.
The required balance should be confirmed in the finished mortar rather than judged from the powder alone.
For applications where water exposure is an important consideration, such as certain wet-area tile adhesive
formulations, waterproofing performance may become an additional selection criterion.In this case, the RDP
should be selected according to the overall formulation requirement rather than treating water resistance as a standalone property.
RDP does not work independently. Its performance should be evaluated together with cement, fillers,
cellulose ether, and other additives used in the tile adhesive.A grade that performs well in one formulation
may not provide the same result after changes in cement type, filler system, polymer dosage, or water demand.
A simple selection approach is:
Application requirement → Required performance → RDP grade → Formulation testing
For example:
General purpose cement based tile adhesive: a universal grade RDP can be considered as a starting point.
Tile adhesive requiring higher bonding strength: consider a high bonding-strength grade.
Tile adhesive requiring bonding strength and flexibility: select a grade that provides both functions.
Applications where waterproofing is also required: consider an RDP with bonding strength, flexibility, and waterproofing functions.

listed for tile adhesive applications and provide bonding strength and flexibility.
JINT™-745 provides bonding strength, flexibility, and waterproofing. It can be considered when
waterproofing is an additional requirement of the tile adhesive formulation.
Product selection should ultimately be based on the required performance of the finished tile
adhesive, rather than on the product name alone.
Before switching to a new RDP grade, prepare the same base formulation and compare the
candidate products under controlled conditions.
Depending on the application, useful tests may include:
1) Tensile adhesion strength
2) Adhesion after relevant water or environmental conditioning
3) Flexibility or deformability
4) Workability and application feel
Keep the cement, aggregate, cellulose ether, water to powder ratio, and RDP dosage consistent during
the initial comparison. This makes it easier to identify the actual effect of the polymer.
For production use, the selected grade should be validated in the customer's final formulation and against
the applicable tile adhesive requirements.
The best redispersible polymer powderfor tile adhesive on cement substrates is not necessarily the same for
every formulation.Start with the application requirement, identify the required performance, select a suitable
RDP grade, and confirm the result through laboratory testing.
For general formulations, JINT™-503 may be a practical starting point. When higher bonding strength is required,
JINT™-502 or JINT™-740 can be evaluated. Where bonding strength, flexibility, and waterproofing are all required,
JINT™-745 can be considered.
